Nai DISHA: New Distinctive Integrated & Sustainable Health Action

GLRA India initiated the comprehensive Nai DISHA (New Distinctive Integrated & Sustainable Health Action) project in May 2019. Under the slogan “On the road to end TB”, it targets truckers, helpers and allied populations in the three trans- shipment locations (TSLs) of Lucknow, Agra and Jaipur in North India. The project is supported by Deutsche Bahn Stiftung, DB Group’s non-profit organisation through BEH.

In the year 2021, the Nai DISHA project received appreciation from key stakeholders and recognition from truckers and the allied population across the three TSLs. The choice of the three locations is based on the main transport axes in India, which pass through the select TSLs allowing the best access to the target groups i.e. truckers and the allied population.

Due to the increased awareness about COVID-19 cases and deaths in India, truckers and the allied population have displayed interest in taking precautions and testing for COVID-19. Nai DISHA has been creating awareness about COVID-19 and TB, as prevention of both has commonalities. GLRA’s work with truck drivers and allied population has caught attention of the state governments of Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Under the Nai DISHA project, GLRA India also distributed ration and hygiene kits to stranded truckers in the targeted TSLs and facilitated TB testing of presumptive patients. The project has been appreciated and covered by CNBC “The Changemakers” series Season 2 that aired on CNBC TV 18 on 30th and 31st January 2021. Continuous efforts of the project team have built up the trust within community and reputation amongst civil society organisations and local government health system in the targeted TSLs.
